Synaptics is the driver for laptop touchpad mice.
/etc/portage/make.conf
INPUT_DEVICES="synaptics evdev"
Your system should have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
directory.
If there isn't one create it:
root # mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf
